Charlotte Trucking

CRTPO says I-85 and I-77 are among North Carolina’s most used freight corridors by truck volume, with portions of both crossing the Charlotte planning area.

The same plan says truck congestion is highest along I-77 and I-85 through the core of the region and north of the I-485 loop.

CRTPO also says the planning area includes two major intermodal rail facilities: the Norfolk Southern facility at Charlotte Douglas International Airport and the CSX intermodal terminal in northwest Charlotte.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport said it handled 205,700 tons of cargo in 2024, up 7.3% from the prior year, and that cargo volumes rose 14.1% in the first seven months of 2025.

For Charlotte carriers working I-77, I-85, I-485, CLT cargo, and intermodal freight, fuel drafts, driver pay, insurance, and repair bills can still come due before the customer pays the invoice.
